SAFEGUARDING IS EVERYONE’S BUSINESS!
At Hillborough Infant and Nursery School we believe that safeguarding children is everyone’s business and is the responsibility of all adults working or volunteering within our school.
The culture of this School is one that is safe for children and unsafe for adults that may pose a risk to children. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all our children. Whatever the background and culture, age, disability, gender or religious belief, we believe that children have the right to participate in a society and environment which is safe and free from violence, fear, abuse, bullying and any form of discrimination. Children the right to be protected from harm, exploitation and abuse, and to be provided with safe environments in which to live, play and enjoy.
Safeguarding is defined as –
- Protecting children from maltreatment;
- Preventing impairment of children's health or development;
- Ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care;
- Taking action to enable all children to have the best life chances.

As Part of our commitment to safeguarding and child protection we fully support the Government's Prevent strategy and take guidance from teaching approaches to help build resilience to extremism.
We are to be part of a jointly run scheme between Luton Borough Council and our school called RELAY. Relay has been set up to help schools provide support to children who may have been affected of domestic abuse in the home. We know that children can be significantly physically or emotionally harmed when they are involved in, present at or a witness to domestic abuse. Under this scheme the school will get a notification from Luton Borough Council of any domestic abuse incidents reported by Bedfordshire Police, where a child in our School may have been affected. We will offer the best support possible to our pupils.
In general, we will discuss any safeguarding and child protection concerns with parents/guardians before approaching other agencies, and will seek consent when making a referral to another agency. A member of staff will speak to parents/guardians after consultation with the Designated Safeguarding Lead, however, there may be occasions when the School will contact another agency before informing parents/guardians, if it considers that there may be a risk of significant harm to the child. The purpose of Hillborough Infant and Nursery School’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and guidelines is to provide a secure framework for our workforce in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of those pupils who attend our School.
